My husband and I married when we were just 18 years old. 9 months later he enlisted in the Army. Now, I’ve been part of military life for more than 50 years—as a military wife, mother, and now grandmother. And if there’s one thing military life taught me, it’s how to start over and adapt.
During my husband’s 24+ years in the Army, our family experienced 11 different duty stations. Along the way, I moved 19 times, including seven stays in temporary quarters and 12 moves into permanent housing. Some of those moves I handled entirely on my own.
I learned a thing or two about packing boxes, getting quarters clean enough to pass an Army inspection, settling children into a new home, and figuring out a new community—only to pack everything up and do it all over again.
But one of my biggest challenges wasn’t moving.
It was finding work.
During the early years of my husband’s Army career, military spouses often faced discrimination when looking for jobs. Employers knew we might only be stationed in the area for a few years, and some simply didn’t want to hire us. Back then, employers could even ask questions about our military lifestyle that they wouldn’t be permitted to ask today.
Like so many military spouses, I had to find another way.
For me, that often meant running a home daycare business. I had young children at the time, so it gave me a way to contribute to our family income while still being there for my children. Most importantly, it was something I could recreate wherever the Army sent us next.
We didn’t call it a “portable income” back then.
We simply called it figuring out a way to make it work.
Today, military spouses have opportunities we could only have dreamed about. Remote work, online businesses, affiliate marketing, digital products, freelancing, and other income opportunities can move right along with your family.
That’s why I want to help today’s military spouses discover ways to create an income that doesn’t have to disappear every time PCS orders arrive.
Because your address may have to change—but your ability to earn an income shouldn’t have to.
